August News for The 15%

Welcome to August! The pinnacle of summer play is upon us and there is a lot going on!

Organized Play: There will be no organized play during the week of August 7-13. Because of the tournament, BPC reserved time (12 courts, 7am to 12:30pm) will be open for Challenge Court play (not for clinics, lessons, private groups, etc.) Monday through Thursday. There will be a lot of demand for play time. Be courteous and share the courts with other players. SUG signups for the following week will roll out on August 8.

Time Change: Beginning September 5, all CoedMXR and Round Robin play start times will change to 8:30am and 10:30am respectively. The play schedule will otherwise remain the same.

Tournament volunteers: Response to our last request has been fantastic, but some help is still needed, particularly line judges and late afternoon shifts. If you can spare a few hours of time during the tournament, we really need you! No experience necessary! Check the SignUp pages under the Tournament Volunteers tab for more details.

Tournament Referees: We are also in need of referees for the tournament. If you are trained as a referee, please check the schedule to see if you can spare a few hours to help out with the tournament. We can be very flexible to accommodate your schedule.

Meet & Greet: The annual tournament Meet & Greet dinner is scheduled for Thursday, August 11, from 5pm to 8pm on the beautiful grounds of Aspen Hall in Shevlin Park. The dinner will be catered by Bleu Bite Catering and there are still a few openings for the event at $21/per person. Members should have already received an invitation, but if you missed it you can register at http://www.bendpickleballclub.com/annual-tournament-meet-greet/

Simon nearly back: Simon suffered an internal failure requiring major surgery. Ron Bessling conducted the operation to remove the defective motor and should have Simon back in action right after the tournament. Your Board has approved the purchase of a second machine (Pickleball Tutor) as backup and it will be arriving about the same time. (More on this when it gets here.)

Volunteers: A REALLY BIG THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who have worked so hard to keep things going this summer and all year round. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the members who make things happen for us: to the crew that gets the courts cleaned up for you every day; to the crews that wash down the courts every few weeks; to the Captains who arrive early to organize play sessions and stay late to put things away; to the Simon operators who set up and operate the machine for you; to the Courts Use Group who meet and plan scheduling and manage player ratings; to the Sign Up Genius administrators who keep the signups in order; to the Tournament Directors and their committees and volunteers who plan, organize, and put on tournaments; to the mentors who give of their time and talents to help develop other players, and to the board members who manage all of this and get the bills paid. Without these people who mostly work in anonymity for the pure joy of doing something for someone else, there would be no Bend Pickleball Club, and very likely players would still be scrounging for courts in driveways, cul-de-sacs, and school yards.

Calcutta Tournament: The Calcutta Tournament still has a few openings for 4.0+ and 2.5/3.0 players. This is going to be a lot of fun and we hope everyone will take advantage of it! Players will only be playing in teams matched by skill level, and the auctions/wagering is completely optional. Please jump in! Check the SUG page under the Calcutta tab for more info.

Dogs: Dogs have become a factious issue at PNP. While Bend is considered a “dog friendly” town, not everyone loves them. Bend Park and Rec owns PNP and therefore their rules apply. Bend Park & Rec rules require that all dogs be on a leash and under the control of a person. If you chose to bring your dog to PNP, please keep your dog under control and don’t allow the dog to bother other park visitors who may not share your love for animals. Be a responsible dog owner and clean up after your dog. If your dog is unfriendly, unruly, or just plain unpredictable, please leave it at home.

Indoor Play: BPC is working on a deal for a new indoor venue for the 2016-17 winter session. We anticipate having 4 full-size courts, in a clean facility with ample dedicated parking and multiple restrooms. The deal is still in the works and we will have more news very soon.

General Meeting: A general meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 8 at the Senior Center. More information to follow.

New members: Please extend a warm welcome to our newest members who joined since the last newsletter: David Amack, Doug Baker, Nancy Balding, Tom Bazemore, Cindy Bushey, Al Bushey, Michele Farneth, Bob Fulton, Ruby Garmyn, Janis Grout, Sherry Gusse, William Herb, Jenn Hofmann, Deenie Jansen, Scott Johnson, Sue Johnson, Cynthia Kane, Gina Lannin, Sheila Lee, Lauretta Medearis, Lolita Mezias, Barbara Munster, Joseph Palos, Mike Rand, Mike Schmitz, Sam Silverman, Jane Silverman, Bill Stevens, Sandy Stevens, Chuck Tompkins, Nancy Voorhees, Jennifer Wallace, Justin Wartena, Bob Weed, Marcus Zanner, and Greg Zath.

In case your’re wondering who the %10 are, if you read all the way to here, you’re one of them. You know who the rest of them are because they rarely seem to know what’s going on.

That’s it for now, see you on the courts!!
