A “round robin” is a structured form of play organized by skill levels. In the time allocated to each round robin session (120 minutes) you will play six games, each with a different partner and against a different pair of opponents. It is designed so that all players are playing against people of roughly equal ability, which makes play the most fun and competitive for most players.
When you arrive you will be assigned a number. Your number remains yours throughout the session and dictates which court you play on, with whom you are playing as a partner, and against which opponents. Your round robin Captain will help you get started with this. By the end of six games you will have played with six different partners and against 12 different opponents! You may have a “bye” (where you sit out for one game) if there is an uneven number of players signed up. A seventh game consisting of the “bye” players enables everybody to play six games.
A round robin Captain is present at every round robin session. The Captain determines the rotation, manages the signup sheet and the time clock, posts the rotation and signup lists, and manages other aspects of round robin play. In order to keep everything running smoothly and on-time, the Captain must do some advance preparation. It is important that players arrive AT LEAST 10 minutes before the round robin is scheduled to start. Late arrivals may be replaced or simply not allowed to play.
Round Robin Registration
A round robin registration is active until one hour before the start of the event.
- It is the responsibility of any registered player to either: 1) cancel their reservation at least one hour before the start of the event, or 2) show up and play. A registered player who does neither of the above potentially is taking a spot away from someone on the waitlist.
- Consequently, the non-cancelling player will get an email warning that outlines the offense and notes the possibility of temporarily losing CourtReserve reservation privileges for any future registration.
Round Robin Waitlist
- When a registered player withdraws from a round robin, the first person on the waitlist will automatically be registered up until one hour before the start of the event. That person is expected to show up to play.
- If that waitlisted person no longer wishes to play, they must remove their name from the waitlist at least one hour before the start of the event. Failure to do so will result in an email warning that outlines the offense and notes the possibility of temporarily losing CourtReserve reservation privileges for any future registration.
Weather Conditions
Round robin play can be dependent on weather that can change on short (or no) notice. When weather conditions are marginal, such as wet when we wake up but could well be dry enough to play by the time the event starts, the restrictions on players are not enforced. We will not cancel the event since there are always those hardy souls who still want to play. However, if you are registered, don’t want to play, and don’t manage to cancel, you will not be penalized. No one should play in weather conditions they find uncomfortable simply because they could not withdraw within the 60-minute cancellation timeframe.
If there is obvious rain/snow, one look at the PN cameras and the weather report will be enough to nix the event without formal notification.
