With summer play right around the corner and the snowbirds trickling back in to Bend, it’s time to give you an update and a few reminders on club activities.
General Meeting: There will be a General Meeting at 6:00pm on Thursday, May 4, in the South Event Room at the Senior Center, 1600 SE Reed Market Road. It will be a great time to catch up on club business and meet or get reacquainted with other club members. If you have questions or need help with any pickleball issues, there will be people on-hand to answer questions and provide information.
Referee Clinic: WE NEED REFEREES! We will be having a referee training session on April 28 from 1 to 3 pm in the meeting room at Deschutes East Side Library, 62080 Dean Swift Road, off of Hwy 20. (Please sign up beforehand.) We will have a second on the court session either the 29th or 30th (weather permitting). Each new referee will have a trained referee as a mentor to help you referee games during recreational play to hone your skills. Each trainee will be required to referee at least 12 games with their mentor to become comfortable with the process before refereeing at either of the tournaments. You also may request to shadow a referee at the tournament before refereeing on your own.
If you are interested in learning to referee, please contact Sandy Brown at pickleballrefs@gmail.com and she will get you registered.
Calcutta Tournament: This is a fun club tournament for all skill levels scheduled for June 1 and June 3. There are still some openings available in all groups. Players will only be playing against other players of a similar skill level so don’t be afraid to sign up! Tournament details and registration links are available at the Club website under the Tournaments>Upcoming Tournaments tab.
Oregon Senior Games, June 16-18: There are still some openings in this tournament. Mixed Doubles event is full but we are allowing people with partners or players who are willing to partner with someone on the Need Partner list to sign up. Tournament details and registration links are available at the Club website under the Tournaments>Upcoming Tournaments tab.
PickleballZone Bend USAPA Regional Tournament, August 10-13: There are still some openings in this tournament. Mixed Doubles event is full but we are allowing people with partners or players who are willing to partner with someone on the Need Partner list to sign up. Tournament details and registration links are available at the Club website under the Tournaments>Upcoming Tournaments tab.
Clinics: There are a number of clinics that will be available in Bend this summer from professional instructors. Check the Clinics>Player Development tab at the Club website for more information.
Court Maintenance/Repairs: We are working with Bend Park & Rec on some projects at Pine Nursery. Courts 1 through 8 are going to be resurfaced as soon as weather permits. Thanks to Mike Groves of Mike’s Fence Center we are also replacing the fence fabric on the north, south, and west fences of 1-8 with a larger mesh fabric and raising the fences slightly to facilitate cleaning of the courts. These courts will be closed intermittently as crews work to get things finished (hopefully) before June. Please bear with us…
